New hockey academy coming to CHS

Posted: March 8, 2017

Caronport High School (CHS), Briercrest College and Seminary, and Prairie Hockey Academy (PHA) are proud to announce their partnership in developing Saskatchewan’s first Hockey Canada Sports School. The partnership will bring a new hockey academy to Caronport High School and a new hockey opportunity to the Saskatchewan market. Starting in fall of 2017, with teams at the Midget Prep and Bantam Prep levels, the intention is to compete independently in showcase tournaments across Western Canada and into the United States. Student-athletes, grades 9 – 12, participating in the Academy will be enrolled at Caronport High School.

Caronport High School has worked collaboratively with PHA to make this opportunity a reality. Derek Zacharias, CHS athletic director, shares his excitement about the opportunity this partnership brings.

“I am really enthusiastic about our partnership with Prairie Hockey Academy! Becoming Saskatchewan’s first Hockey Canada Sport School will provide us increased opportunities to positively impact the lives of young athletes with the gospel of Jesus Christ, as they follow their passions. Our integration of academic, athletic, character, and spiritual development will provide a solid platform from where these young men and women will be able to establish champion mindsets and prepare for lives of service.”

The hockey development and training programs will be created and led by Prairie Hockey Academy, founded by Justin Simpkins.

“We are excited for the opportunity this has created for Saskatchewan student-athletes to be part of a program that not only focuses on developing skill on the ice, but puts a strong emphasis on off-ice character and leadership development,” said Simpkins. “I have always been passionate about using sports to develop leaders and feel that the Hockey Canada Sports School model allows us to integrate hockey development and leadership curriculum into the classroom. We will develop young men and women who become life champions and go on to lead in their homes, workplaces, and communities.”
